Supply for the consumption of Alaska pollock fillets rose 30 percent than 130 million pounds in 2022, according to the Association of Genuine Alaska Pollock Producers (GAPP).
The 2022 figure is the second-highest supply total since 2011 and has been driven, in large part, by an increase in consumer familiarity with Alaska pollock, GAPP CEO Craig Morris said. Alaska pollock represents at least 60 percent of U.S. consumption of pollock and
“It’s clear that American consumers are demanding more wild Alaska pollock and that our fish has become the ‘go-to’ when consumers are looking for a mild-tasting, healthy and sustainable whitefish,” Morris said. “This number parallels what we learned at our annual meeting last October, when our 2022 year-over-year research showed solid increases in name recognition of wild Alaska pollock and record-setting purchase intent among U.S. consumers.”
The announcement comes on the heels of a partnership announced between Nordstrom Restaurants and Seattle, Washington-based Trident Seafoods on an Alaska pollock promotion.
During Earth Month in April, Nordstrom Restaurants will feature a Blackened Wild Alaska Pollock with Cajun Risotto dish, while its specialty coffee bars will feature a grab-and-go Blackened Wild Alaska Pollock Taco Salad.
"We are proud to be partnering with Nordstrom, a brand that has sustainability at its core and innovation in its spirit,” Trident CEO Joe Bundrant said in a press release. “One of our goals at Trident is to spread the word about wild Alaska pollock and its incredible benefits. These two delicious dishes showcase the beauty of this fish and how easy it is to create flavorful menu items using wild Alaska pollock as the inspiration.”
Nordstrom chefs competed for which dish would be part of the April menu after a day-long creative session with GAPP and Trident executives.
“Alaska pollock checks all the boxes when it comes to what we are looking to offer our customers. It’s high quality, flavorful, nutrient dense, lean and most importantly sustainable,” Nordstrom Restaurants Director of Culinary Kati Lauffer said.
